Creating a private and inviting outdoor space can be a challenge, especially when dealing with existing structures that don’t quite meet your needs. One of our recent clients faced this exact problem. They wanted to enhance the privacy of their outdoor patio area, which featured a concrete planter box acting as a low wall. Their goal was to add a stylish privacy fence topper that would blend seamlessly with the existing setup while providing the right amount of seclusion.
Understanding the Client’s Needs
The client’s outdoor patio is part of a complex, and the planter box at the front is a prominent feature. It stretches approximately 8 meters in length and serves as a natural boundary. However, the planter box alone did not provide enough privacy for the client’s outdoor activities. They wanted a privacy fence topper that would:
Extend privacy along about 7 meters of the planter box length
Leave small open ends for access to taps and maintenance
Be approximately 45 cm tall above the planter box
Feature horizontal slats spaced about 25 mm apart
Be finished in a cream or primrose color to complement the outdoor setting
Offer options in both aluminium and PVC materials for durability and style
The planter box itself had been sealed with heavy-duty fibre sheeting, which provided a solid base for securing brackets. This detail was important because it meant the fence topper could be mounted securely without damaging the planter box.
Designing the Solution
Our team worked closely with the client to design a horizontal slat privacy fence topper that met their specifications. The choice of horizontal slats was deliberate, as it offers a modern look while maintaining privacy without feeling too enclosed. The 25 mm spacing between slats allowed for some light and airflow, keeping the patio comfortable.
We presented two material options:
Aluminium: Lightweight, rust-resistant, and strong. Ideal for long-term durability.
PVC: Cost-effective, low maintenance, and easy to clean. Also resistant to weathering.
Both options were finished in a soft cream color, which brightened the space and matched the existing planter box and outdoor décor.
Installation Process
The installation team began by assessing the planter box and confirming the integrity of the fibre sheeting seal. This was crucial for mounting the brackets securely. The brackets were fixed inside the planter box wall, ensuring a clean look without visible hardware on the outside.
The fence topper was then assembled on-site, with each horizontal slat carefully aligned to maintain the 25 mm spacing. The height of 45 cm above the planter box was confirmed to provide the desired privacy without overwhelming the space.
The design also included small open bookends at each side of the planter box. These gaps allowed easy access to taps and other utilities without compromising the overall privacy.
Before and After: The Transformation
Before installation, the patio felt exposed, with the concrete planter box offering little privacy. After adding the horizontal slat fence topper, the space transformed into a cozy, private retreat. The cream-colored slats softened the look of the concrete and added a stylish feature that enhanced the overall outdoor aesthetic.
